Announcement:
The Sertoma Club of Nashville is pleased to announce the
winners of its 45th Annual Freedom Essay scholarship contest.
The grand prize winner is Kristen Phillips, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Clyde Phillips of Madison, TN. Kristen
is a senior at Davidson Academy. Judy Roberts is
her school advisor.
The three runner's up include:
- Michael
Pelster, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Pelster of Brentwood, TN and a senior at
Brentwood Academy. Ann Moore is
his school advisor.
- Arden
Ratcliff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ratcliff of Franklin and a student
at Centennial High School. Carol
Smith is her school advisor.
- Jenny
Beth Jordan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jaime Jordan of Greenbrier and a
student at Davidson Academy. Judy
Roberts is also her school advisor.
Seniors at high schools throughout middle Tennessee were
invited to submit essays on the topic "The Media and the First Amendment:
should "freedom of speech" ever be limited or restricted in the media?"
Approximately seventy students representing 35 high schools submitted
essays.
The name "Sertoma" is a combination of the words
"SERvice TO MAnkind" It is an
international organization with clubs throughout the United States and in many
other countries. The Nashville club
was established in 1946. It
promotes community service, fellowship, and support of many different human and
social services efforts. Although
its primary focus is supporting speech and hearing issues, its members are
actively involved in the support of many other important services as well.
The Club meets every Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. at the Maxwell
House Hotel for lunch and invites local citizens interested in our common goals
to visit its meetings.
